The following was written by Ben Lapp, formerly the Operations Supervisor at Wood-Tex Products who is now a Counselor at Fair Play Boys Camp, and will give you greater insight into the work of the camp:
“Go with me on a journey in your imagination. Let's say that you have been asked to move into this nice house your boss has bought you and told you to live out of state at a new location for the next year. Ok, fine, most of us wouldn't object. But upon your arrival you discover that the house is a brick house, still ok you might say, but the bricks have all fallen into a chaotic heap two years ago when the earthquake took place. Sound hopeless? What would happen if we would take that scenario and put it into a young boys life? Trauma seems like a pale word to describe that now doesn't it?!! This is what the work at Fair Play Camp School is all about!
Hi,I'm Ben Lapp, and I have had the tremendous privilege to be a part of the process of "rebuilding" lives of young teens for the past 22 months. The whole mission and focus is to restore these young men, who have so much potential, to the families and the futures they were created to be a part of! We live in the woods in a permanent tent type of structure and are in four
groups, with ten teen males in each group. Each of these young teens has agreed to come to receive help with living with their families and to learn how to be a part of school respecting their authority instead of degrading them. There are two "Chiefs," or counselors, in each group, and I
am one of them! Each and every part of our day hinges on two basic commitments that every single person at Camp commits to: to help ourselves, and to help others! There is so much more that can't even be put into words in writing, but just like we can't say that one certain thing other than just love changes them, so I can't describe every aspect of Camp in a way that you feel the culture of Camp. Just imagine with me again a place where there are 60-70 boys and Staff all trying to help each other work through all of our inherent problems we all face, and that is Camp!”
So join in, we can’t wait to experience the Best Christmas Ever with this deserving
organization!
